Seminars

There are three seminars in the afternoon of the conference. Here’s a synopsis of what the presenters will talk about:

Danielle Markland: Podcasting with podium

Podcasting has the potential to offer much toward the agenda of personalised learning in schools and beyond. This real-world medium sitting alongside and within the variety of web 2.0 tools and applications certainly deserves investigation and consideration from and educational perspective. This session will explain the technology, the pedagogy and the opportunities that are created by the ownership of publishing podcasts. During the hands on session using Podium, a Podcast Creation Tool, designed specifically for Education you can create, edit and publish a podcast from the same simple interface. Come to the session and have a go! Podcasting is not for the few… it is for the many. Let their voices be heard!

Ian Billups:  Recording assessments and reporting online

Suppose you go to Amazon’s web site from one of Chorlton Park’s computers on Saturday. If you’re a customer you can log in and they will recognize you and show you what you’ve bought before. You are using Amazon’s database without installing or storing anything yourself: you are using an online system.

Primary schools will use more and more online systems: VLEs, Raise Online, the newer MIS systems, etc. Many are using INCERTS, an online system used by teachers to record assessments and write reports, which Ian designed. Ian will demonstrate INCERTS and discuss online systems in schools more generally.

Owen Napier:  The Future of Assessment Tools

Assessment tools are an exciting and underutilised technology with enormous forward potential for schools in every sector. At a basic level they can assist a teacher in monitoring every child’s understanding on a given topic, and encourage contribution from pupils who are typically too shy to put their hand up. Taken further, this technology has the potential to underpin a formative assessment process, and in the future may be used to create a truly personalised learning experience for every child.
